Chocolate Bourbon Cherry Cola Float Cupcakes

Chocolate Bourbon Cherry Cola Float Cupcakes by Booze, Sugar & Spice

I love blogs.  I love cupcake blogs, food blogs, art blogs, cartoon blogs, humorous blogs and just talking about my life blogs.  Check out my Cupcake Folk and Blogs I <3 for some of my favorite blogs.   There is an abundance of creative, interesting people out there willing to share what they have to say and create with you.  Their creativity is entertaining and inspiring.

For example, one of my favorites is How Sweet Eats.  She’s funny and everything she makes sounds amazing!  However, when I discovered this post:  Dark Chocolate Bourbon Cherry Soda Floats  I realized I had just been introduced to a new way to get booze into my cupcake hole!  I wonder if there’s a waiting list to be her best friend for life?  Also, the idea to use chocolate ice cream in a float never occurred to me.  Mind. Blown.  I had been locked in a prison of vanilla based non-alcoholic floats all my life and didn’t even know it.  Now I’m free and there’s no stopping me!

So, of course, I made the floats first.  OMG!  Thank goodness my job has a ‘no drinking at lunch’ policy, otherwise, this float would be lunch everyday.  Seriously, I’d ride my bike the 50 miles round trip everyday just to allow for the calories.  Everyone knows dark chocolate and cherry are a delicious match but who knew they both paired so well with bourbon?!?  DID YOU?!?!   WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?!?!  {deep breath}  I’m calm now.  Sorry.

Next step was to turn that delicious combination into a cupcake.  Behold!  I give unto you this wonderful and eye-opening tasty drink in cupcake form!

It's magically delicious!

It’s magically delicious!

I started out with Cupcake Project’s  (another favorite blogger, of course) ridiculously easy recipe (all you need is a whisk and a bowl).  I switched out the cola for cherry cream soda, chucked in some bourbon and cocoa powder and created a cherry cream soda and bourbon buttercream to top it all off.  Soooooo delicious!

Chocolate Bourbon Cherry Cola Float Cupcakes (adapted from Cupcake Project)

Makes 12

  • ¾ cup black cherry cream cola
  • ¼ cup bourbon
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons Kool Kola extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup Dutch processed cocoa
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.  Line muffin tin with 12 liners.  Whisk together cherry cola, bourbon and vinegar, set aside.  In another bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa baking soda and baking powder.  Add sugar, oil, and extract to cola-vinegar mixture and whisk until sugar is dissolved.  Blend in the flour mixture until just combined.  Fill liners ¾ way full and bake 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.  Immediately remove from pans to a wire rack to cool.

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 Tablespoons black cherry cream cola
  • 1 Tablespoon bourbon
  • 3 – 4 cups of powdered sugar

Beat the butter until fluffy.  Add in the cola, bourbon and the powdered sugar a cup at time until the desired sweetness is reached.  Frost cooled cupcakes.  Garnish with a cherry, if desired.

BTW – Naturally, I topped this cupcake with a cherry.  I rarely do that.  However, isn’t it interesting most depictions of cupcakes have a cherry on top?  Below is my cupcake with two wonderful gifts I received over the holiday season.  Do you notice the trend?  When did this start and why does it continue?  Maybe because it’s adorable?  I know, shut up, it IS adorable and what do I want on top a grapefruit?  P.S.  Thanks to my friends for the awesome gifts!

Anyway, make the float and/or the cupcakes and report back how your taste buds have been enlightened!

Until next time, stick a cupcake in your cakehole!

xoxo PJ

P.S.  I’m in the process of polishing up my blog, so I apologize in advance for any construction mess which may occur.
